Cocktails in the same family share similar ingredients, are made using the same technique and are served in the same glassware. Guests tend to have a preference for cocktails of a specific family, using a preferred ingredient, or served in a particular type of glass, so cocktail families are a useful frame of reference for recommending cocktails to guests.

This course, Basic Cocktail Families, covers the following:

  • Seven basic cocktail families, including stirred, sour, highball, crushed ice, carbonated wine and dairy cocktails, and punches
  • The flavour profile of each of the seven families
  • The ingredients, glassware, and garnish commonly used in each of the seven families
  • Tips for speaking about and recommending cocktails to guests.
